1. Begriff: Neuausrichtung der gesellschaftlichen Rolle und Verantwortung von Unternehmen, sozial- und ökologisch vertretbare Produktionsweisen, globaler Fokus. Weitgehend deckungsgleich mit der sozialen Dimension der ⇡ nachhaltigen Entwicklung. Die Unternehmung als „guter Bürger“ in der Gesellschaft (⇡ Corporate Citizenship); bis heute weitgehend ein anglo-amerikanisches Phänomen geblieben. Nachhaltigkeit wurde in Deutschland weitgehend aus dem ökologischen Blickwinkel heraus definiert, starke Vernachlässigung der sozialen Dimension.

Inhalt: Extrem breites Spektrum möglicher Themen, wie Menschenrechte, Kinderarbeit, Bestechung, Gemeindeaktivitäten, Rechte von Eingeborenen, Beziehung zu Lieferanten und Kunden, ethische Werte, Anzahl der beschäftigten behinderten Menschen, Rechte von Arbeitnehmern, Beschäftigungspraktiken usw.
- 3. Politik: Die Europäische Kommission will die soziale Verantwortung in Unternehmen vorantreiben (2001 „Grünbuch“, 2002 „Strategiepapier“ mit Vorschlägen für eine Corporate-Social-Responsibility-Förderung in Unternehmen).
